This project for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool was an amazing job to work on, and to know what a difference the art makes to the children at the Hospital is heart warming and humbling.
In 2015 a brand new Alder Hey Hospital, the only park-based children’s hospital in Europe opened. I worked with London-based Jungle Interactive in collaboration with the hospital’s trust and feedback from local children to create The Hardleeys, a set of characters and their habitat. These are used on mobile apps, digital games, installations, vinyl wall art, linear videos and books. The stories were specially written, featuring our characters and presented by well known celebrities.
Each character has their own back story and personality and are used to explain diferent elements of hospital life such as diet, physio exercises and medical procedures.
“The Hardleeys are cuddly and caring creatures who are desperate to make friends with the children at Alder Hey Hospital. They are integrated throughout the building and will be helping to distract and reassure children during their visits.”
I’m especially happy with the transformation of the long white corridors, leading to the theatres. We created a completely immersive experience where the wall art was combined with soundscapes to help distract anxious patients. Working closely with the play therapists and physiotherapists we also created a series of interactive randomised games and activities to encourage the children to become mobile following their operation.
